Is it possible to grow out of yoga?

Posted on July 30th, 2007 under Ashtanga Diary

Could it be? That I’ve ‘grown’ out of yoga? It’s been so long since I’ve done any sort of practice that I’m not sure if I even remember what to do! Ok… so that’s just a melodramatic statement on my part.

I don’t really have any excuses as to why I haven’t practiced. Truth is that it just doesn’t matter what the reasons are, fact is, I haven’t practiced in months. And with no practice, comes no yoga blogging.

I could say it was the accident, the lack of motivation, not going to class, pre-occupation with work or other interests such as gardening taking up my spare time. Thing is, I’ve always been a believer that if it’s something you want to do, you find the time to do it. So it leaves me wondering whether I’ve lost interest in, or grown out of yoga, but if I’ve lost interest in the past few months, then why am I constantly thinking about it again?

Or am I just over-thinking this and should just shut my brain up and get on with starting over again?

I understand the concern as my practice ebbs and flows. I think that perhaps you have a life which some Yogis don’t seem to have. All the best.

What do you mean by “… perhaps you have a life which some Yogis don’t seem to have…”?

just start! — but listen to your body… do what feels best! everyone’s practice will change over time. but if you are thinking about it, missing it, get on the mat!

that’s what i thought years ago- it’s just physical exercises, i’m over it right? well for me things changed. realized i missed the energy i find through yoga, and i like the combination of a dynamic process and learning with regularity and structure. i think ashtanga is a good fit with my personality and it’s something you can do and refine for a long time. you’ll find out whether you miss it or not. in the meantime i’m jealous of your gardening, as an apartment dweller!

Yeah, I started this morning with just a few sun salutations. Something small but it felt good, tight, but good.

@myst: I live in an apartment as well, I’m a container gardener :)

Once you are into it again, the memory slowly pick up and there comes all your writing inspiration again.

One of the hardest parts about spiritual practice is to Keep Going, regardless of mood and results. The deeper benefits of Yoga & Meditation are sometimes described as getting wet in a fog, where you don’t realize you are getting wet, but if you stay out there long enough you will be soaked through and through…. so get back to it! It is the ultimate adventure.

    Best,

Hi….I see you have not written a blog since August….hope that all is well with you, we all have times when the asana part of our yoga practice changes. I just know for me, that I may go for weeks without rolling my mat out and getting on it….and then when I do it’s like greeting a wonderful, close friend……familiar, and comforting. The thing is to avoid having any expectations of yourself….just enjoy!!
