Kurmasana and Supta K again

Posted on September 21st, 2006 under Ashtanga Diary

I had a most excellent practice today. The flow was there mostly, except for the immense amount of wriggling in the self-given kurmasana and supta kurmasana.

I got my feet crossed (note: not ankles), but then couldn’t get my arms back behind me to bind. I also took a look at the numerous books I have, it looks like it’s actually possible grab the wrist. I’m not near the wrist, but I have a solid finger grasp.

So now I have to figure out how to cross the feet then work my hands behind me. I’m not going for leg behind head without a teacher present though.

The back is still going nuts at me in the up-dog to down-dog transitions, but it seems to settle down a lot after kurmasana and supta kurmasana. I can feel the erector spinae muscles along the right side of my spine all tensed up. Some muscles in the right butt cheek are also kinda tense. I’m sure they’re either causing, or a result, of the lower back pain/pinching I get in that transition.

I’m considering either see the physio again, or going for a remedial massage.

From everything I’ve learned, you should bind the hands first and then work the feet together. It does make a difference, but in my case I can’t always achieve it, just telling you so maybe you can try it that way instead.

You just have to keep experimenting. But I would advise working on getting the arms in the right place for binding before you cross your ankles. And no matter how open you think your hips are, they still need to probably be MORE open for Supta K. I wrote a LOT about Supta K on my blog today. I really think there might be some good tips for you on there. But everyone’s body is different, so keep that in mind. Again, read what you can, but keep experimenting…

Thanks for the tips Keith and Lauren, I’ve been binding hands first then wriggling the feet together so far. I tried getting feet crossed first with the help of my hands, then I just got stuck with the arms in front. At least I know now to do the arms first!

I just have to find a way to cross the feet without my arms :\

Lauren, I’m on my way to your post right now :)
