The injury verdict

So I’ve been to the physiotherapist 3 times now. The knee problem didn’t end up serious. They physio said it was the lateral meniscal cartilage that was either very irritated or torn. He said we should be hoping that it’s just very irritated, because if the cartilage is torn, it would take a while to heal.

The meniscal cartilages, or meniscus, are two crescent shaped cartilage on the weight bearing part of your knee joint between the tibia and femur bones. It acts like a shock absorber for your knees to cushion the impact from walking etc.

The physio said that in the position that I was in ([link]janu C[/link]), it’s no wonder something happened to the cartilage since it’s often damaged by extreme flexion plus a little bit of a twist.

The knee is better now, and I’m back to my normal routine, although I’m still taking it easy. I got back into janu shirsasana C for the first time yesterday, but I was easing myself into it, so I wasn’t as deep in the pose as I use to be. I also added back in marichyasana B and the full lotus in closing postures.

As for the numbness in my leg, that’s getting a whole lot better too. I was pretty impressed at how the physio could determine that it was the nerve at L5 in my lower back that was causing the problem. I was given some exercises, some sports massage and treatments on my lower back and the numbness is slowly dissipating.

One of the ladies at yoga class suggested that all my problems could have something to do with the iliopsoas muscle. Although I personally feel that it’s a nerve issue, I’m going to bring this up with the physio on Friday.
